Parceria resultou na realização de estágios por parte de duas alunas da Universidade de Indiana.
A SPECO recebeu, graças a uma parceria com a FLAD - Fundação Luso-Americana para o Desenvolvimento, duas alunas da Universidade de Indiana - Amelia Magyar e Karenna Tankersley. As duas alunas realizaram vários projectos em colaboração com a SPECO durante um espaço de tempo de dois meses.
Thanks to a partnership with FLAD - the Luso-American Development Foundation, SPECO welcomed two students from Indiana University - Amelia Magyar and Karenna Tankersley. The two students carried out various projects in collaboration with SPECO over a two-month period.

Olá! My name is Amelia Magyar, and I am an environmentalist. I grew up in Indianapolis, the capital city of Indiana, and currently attend Indiana University. I am entering the final year of my Master of Public Affairs, specializing in Environmental Policy and Sustainable Development. Throughout my academic journey, I have developed an interest in policy analysis, land use planning, and the implementation of sustainable initiatives.

Olá! I'm Karenna Tankersley and I am a dual master's student from Indiana University studying public affairs and environmental science. I am in love with forests, and have focused on studying biodiversity and ecology, national policy, carbon sequestration, and community-based natural resource management in relation to forests across the globe. My work and values all surround themes of community, climate, and conservation action.

Como foi o seu tempo com a SPECO?
A SPECO tratou-me incrivelmente bem! A SPECO está muito próxima dos meus interesses profissionais, o que torna o tempo que passei nela inestimável. Senti-me muito bem recebida e apreciada pelo meu trabalho como estagiária.
Que competências desenvolveu durante a experiência?
Consegui adaptar-me e navegar num ambiente de trabalho internacional, completamente fora da minha zona de conforto. Durante os meus curtos dois meses, tinha duas propostas de projectos e um prazo de entrega, pelo que a forma como os resultados eram apresentados dependia exclusivamente de mim. Logo, tive de aperfeiçoar a minha ética de trabalho autónomo na SPECO.
Se tivesse mais tempo, o que é que gostaria de ter feito na SPECO?
Gostaria de ter ajudado a implementar algumas das estratégias sustentáveis que investiguei para o Encontro Nacional de Ecologia. Ver o meu trabalho ganhar vida teria sido ainda mais gratificante.
Qual é a sua mensagem final?
A nossa geração está a ser confrontada com a oportunidade de sucumbir às falhas do passado da humanidade ou de mudar completamente o campo de ação. Com destruição irreversível no horizonte, encorajo todos a agirem no melhor interesse uns dos outros e, por sua vez, do nosso planeta.
How was your time at SPECO?
SPECO treated me incredibly well! SPECO closely aligns with my professional interests, which makes my time spent there invaluable. I felt warmly welcomed and appreciated for my work as an intern.
What skills did you develop during your experience?
I was able to adapt and navigate an international work environment, which is completely out of my comfort zone. During my short two months, I had two project proposals and a deadline, so how the deliverables fared at the end was solely up to me. I had to sharpen my self-guided work ethic at SPECO.
If you had more time, what would you have liked to do at SPECO?
I would have liked to help implement some of the sustainable stategies I researched for the National Ecology Meeting. Seeing my work come alive would have been even more fulfilling.
What's your take home message?
Our generation has been faced with the opportunity to either succumb to humanity's past faults or shift the playing field entirely. With irreversible destruction on the horizon, I encourage all to act in the best interest of each other, and in turn, our planet.

Como foi o seu tempo com a SPECO?
O tempo que passei a trabalhar com a SPECO foi verdadeiramente maravilhoso. Tive a oportunidade de viajar e falar com especialistas de uma grande variedade de disciplinas ecológicas e de aprender directamente com eles. Aprender com tantos especialistas, todos eles pessoas muito amáveis e calorosas, foi uma experiência especial que penso que pouco estudantes têm a oportunidade de experimentar. Tive também o prazer de trabalhar com pessoas maravilhosas, não só em todo o país, mas também no escritório da SPECO. Estou muito grata à Professora Maria Amélia por nos dar sempre a liberdade de trazermos as nossas próprias ideias para um projectos, mas também por nos desafiar constantemente a melhorar o nosso foco e por nos levar a fazer o nosso melhor trabalho.
Que competências desenvolveu durante a experiência?
Pude trabalhar com software GIS, que é uma competência técnica importante, e também pude aprender mais sobre análise de texto e como utilizar o R Studio para obter informações importantes a partir de grandes quantidades de texto. No entanto, também pude trabalhar algumas competências transversais, incluindo a comunicação de ciência e falar com especialistas em ecologia, o que é muito valioso para alguém que trabalha na interface dos assuntos públicos e da ciência ambiental.
Se tivesse mais tempo, o que é que gostaria de ter feito na SPECO?
Gostaria de ter aprofundado o meu projecto de análise de texto, analisando o conteúdo das teses de doutoramento submetidas ao "Prémio de Doutoramento em Ecologia Fundação Amadeu Dias" ao longo dos anos. Penso que seria muito útil aprender mais sobre os temas da investigação ecológica em Portugal e ver se/como esses temas mudaram ao longo do tempo. Também acho que teria feito mais perguntas aos futuros convidados do SPECOcorner, porque mesmo quando o material não chegou a ser publicado na entrevista, foi realmente valioso obter um conhecimento mais profundo de pessoas que estão na vanguarda das suas áreas.
Qual é a sua mensagem final?
A minha mensagem final é que é sempre importante fazer mais perguntas e partilhar mais ideias. Nunca se sabe o que se pode aprender ou em que novo e divertido projecto nos podemos envolver!
How was your time at SPECO?
My time working with SPECO was truly wonderful. I had the opportunity to travel and speak with experts across a wide variety of ecological disciplines and learn from them directly. Learning from so many experts, all of which were also very kind and warm people, was a special experience that I think few students get to experience. I was also happy to work with wonderful people not only out across the country, but in the SPECO office as well. I am very thankful to Professora Maria Amélia for always allowing us the freedom to bring our own ideas to a project, but also for consistently challenging us to improve our focus and push us to do our best work.
What skills did you develop during your experience?
I was able to work with GIS software, which is an important technical skill, and I was also able to learn more about text analysis and how to use R Studio to retrieve important information from large quantities of text. However, I was also able to work on some soft skills, including science communication, and speaking with experts in ecology, which is very valuable for someone working at the interface of public affairs and environmental science.
If you had more time, what would you have liked to do at SPECO?
I would have liked to get further into my text analysis project, looking at the content of PhD thesis submitted to "Prémio de Doutoramento em Ecologia Fundação Amadeu Dias" over the years. I think there would be a lot of value in learning more about the themes in ecological research in Portugal, and seeing if/how those themes have changed over time. I also think I would have asked more questions to future SPECOcorner guests, because even when the material didn't make it to the published interview, it was really valuable to gain deeper knowledge from passionate people at the forefront of their fields.
What's your take home message?
My take home message would be that it is always important to ask more questions and share more ideias. You never know what you may learn, or what new fun project you might get roped into!
